I've been mulling over this project idea for awhile now, uncertain and intimidated, which usually means it's time to jump in. But also in part I've been reluctant because I have a sort of issue with the inherent idea of self portraits, with the narcissism it could encourage and because I'm not interested in knowing or discovering myself on some new level. Sorry if that sounds unvogue. Trust me, I have enough to to deal with with what I already know. Mostly it's the artistic push that intrigues me, and the freedom of having a subject always willing and present. So I'm diving in, intimidated and unsure but excited to try something new. I'm also joining my high school photography students in their self portrait project, and one way we are combatting the navel gazing is to pair our images with a written piece about someone else... someone who has impacted or shaped us in some way in our lives.
